[…] Because of the small sample size, all variables were analyzed using a non-parametric approach. Continuous data are summarized as medians with interquartile ranges, whereas categorical data are presented as counts and percentages. To avoid the confounding effect related to the first study night, comparisons were made between N0 and N2 sleep data. The percent (%) change ([N2 (or HPP) value − N0 (or regular pillow) value]/[N0 (regular pillow) value] × 100) was calculated for the variables of interest. Pairwise comparisons were made using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The Mann-Whitney U test was used for independent variables. The statistical power was calculated for each outcome measure using a two-tailed Wilcoxon signed-rank test or Mann-Whitney U test (parent distribution, normal; β/α ratio, 4). Categorical variables were analyzed with the Fisher’s exact test or the χ2 test, as appropriate. Correlations between variables were tested using the Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient. Statistical calculations were performed using the G*Power (version 3.1.9.2; University Kiel, Germany), IBM SPSS (version 22; IBM, Armonk, NY, USA), and the GraphPad Prism for Windows (version 6.01; GraphPad Inc., San Diego, CA, USA) software packages.
