[…] As the samples were not normally distributed, statistical comparisons of data between groups were made using the non-parametric Mann–Whitney U-test (MWU) for total NMS score, NMS domains, and age. The chi-squared test (χ2) was carried out for a comparison of gender distribution and for a comparison of the proportion of “yes” and “no” responses between patients and controls for each single item. Spearman rank correlation coefficients were used to examine correlations between total NMS score and demographic as well as clinical data in the MND group with a correlation coefficient of rho < 0.3 considered as a weak, rho = 0.3–0.59 a moderate, and rho ≥ 0.6 a strong correlation. Data were analyzed using the software programs SPSS 21.0 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA) and Statistica 12.0 [StatSoft (Europe) GmbH, Hamburg, Germany].
