The growth of Scanning Probe microscopy (SPM) has been parallel to the revolution of computer technologies. In fact, computers have played a central role in the development of this technique significantly improving the data acquisition, control, image processing, and data analysis.

WSXM can be run semi-automatically to remove typical artifacts when applying common filters to process SPM images. It can prevent the appearance of undesired shadowing effects which is common in conventional flatten procedures. This tool is useful for biological data.
