Ever since the beginning of extracellular recordings, several efforts have been made to develop such techniques (Abeles and Goldstein, 1977; Lewicki, 1998). In general, the number of simultaneously recorded neurons has grown exponentially since the 1950s, doubling every 7 years, and currently allowing electrical observation of hundreds of neurons at sub-millisecond timescales (Stevenson and Kording, 2011).
